The Lab on a Chip
--------------------------------------
In areas of the world with rampant life-threatening disease, the ability to diagnose is one of the most powerful tools to have. The Clinicard Immunoassay Reader can rapidly test for diseases like AIDS and hepatitis, offering point-of-care diagnosis and counseling, while its size and portability make it ideal for mobile care in low resource villages and towns in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This two-phase design project with Smart Design and Claros Diagnostics involved developing a physical housing and interface for the microfuidics and point-of-care technology pioneered at the Columbia biomedical research Sia Lab. As part of the design team from Pratt Design Incubator, my roles included supporting the research group in Africa, design research and strategy, and design and prototype development of the first field-testing models.

Food for thought
--------------------------------------

Plum Organics, fueled by the early success of their revolutionary baby food pouches, is always looking to explore new opportunities to provide parents better, healthier options for feeding their families. As a design and research consultant, I have worked with Plum to discover unmet needs in family nutrition, and identify market opportunities that meet parents' needs for simplicity and convenience without compromising their families' health and well-being.

While the details of the on-going work are protected by a non-disclosure agreement, I'm happy to share more upon request.

Sweat Equity Education (SEE) is an education innovation founded by fashion designer Marc Eckō, to re-imagine the intersection of education, workforce development, and entrepreneurship. SEE combines technology and design-thinking with real-world projects that teach real-world skills to at-risk students and sets them on a path for success.

As a project manager and educator, my role was split between teaching students in our dynamic studio-as-classroom, and supporting relationships with our corporate client-partners. I worked to align Instruction in design principles and tools, with project calendars and deliverables. Creating everything from t-shirts to electronics accessories to awareness campaigns, students applied techniques in research, iteration, and critical thinking, along with digital software and traditional hand skills, to create professional and insightful designs - some of which went straight to market!

Come Aboard and Play
--------------------------------------
The Hunts Point Alliance for Children is a not-for-profit organization for the education and advocacy of children in one of the poorest areas of the Bronx in New York City. With support from the Karuna Gives Foundation, we created a nautical themed playspace inviting parents and toddlers to play and learn together.

Celebrating the maritime history of Hunts Point, a bi-level wooden ship encourages physical exploration and discovery. A lending library of toys allows families to take the fun home with them, bring them back and borrow more. Exposed construction and textures enhances the experience and supports tactile play and building.

In collaboration with Sinclair Smith, the project included interior design and building, as well as custom toy design, toy and furniture sourcing, and project management.

Made in Brooklyn
--------------------------------------
After redesigning Icestone's shipping crates, I created this tabletop display unit for showcasing material samples and clear brand recognition. "Made in Brooklyn" is the mantra of IceStone, manufacturers of 100% recycled content countertop surfaces. The design utilizes locally sourced materials including reclaimed aluminum and recycled car tires. A pack-flat design allows for smart shipping.

Kitchen & Bath
--------------------------------------
Not every project is a game changer, sometimes it is just a simple well-executed drinking glass or pair of scissors. Working for esteemed product design studio, George Schmidt Design, I created contemporary housewares, ranging from bath suites to table top items, kitchen tools and storage solutions. We worked from research to sketch to final production, informed by classical design styles and proportions, and realized in refined materials and treatments. We worked closely with our client manufacturers, making regular factory visits to stay abreast of production techniques.

Got Shopping Bags?
--------------------------------------
This handy little waste basket both uses and stores the ubiquitous plastic grocery bags leftover from shopping. I first created it in design school, where it was the winner of the Pratt + Umbra Design Competition. I independently launched it in 2008 and it has been growing ever since. It is available internationally, and has been featured in numerous websites and press sources.

Oh, and did I mention it is manufactured right here in the USA, and from recycled plastic? Yup.

Taking Solar Off the Roof
--------------------------------------
SMIT (Sustainably Minded Interactive Technologies) incorporates the newest technological advancements in thin-film photovoltaics, tensile structure engineering, and environmental monitoring and response. I have worked with them on numerous product development projects, including the development of Solar Ivy, their patented solar energy capture system inspired by ivy as it scales the walls of buildings. I helped them with system and electromechanical component design, from concept to prototype to manufacture.
